Skateboarding on the beach…whaaaaat?!?! Check out the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California from July 28th-August 5th. An action-packed combo of surfing and skateboarding will go down all week long. Multiple skate competitions will be poppin’ this year with a total of a $90,000 prize purse. New to this year’s Surf Open is the skate extravaganza Skatepark of Tampa HB Pro Invitational and the Damn Am HB presented by Nike Skateboarding.
Both competitions will be held in the street course created by CA Skateparks that is a brilliant reflection of famous street skate spots around the world. The top 48 skate ams who qualified in other Damn Am competitions nationwide will compete in the Damn Am in HB in Qualifiers on Friday, August 3rd. The Damn Am HB Best Trick and Finals are on Saturday, August 4th. On August 5th, the top 20 skate pros will show their skills in the Skatepark of Tampa HB Pro Invitational by invitation only. Returning event Converse Coastal Carnage will bring in the top 40 pro skaters to shred the mini-park/bowl section created by SpeerCo. Qualifiers are Saturday, August 4th and Best Trick and Finals are Sunday, August 5th.
It will be nothing but an intense comp with all of the talented pros and ams from Nike, Converse and other major skate teams. Look out for young gun Curren Caples. A 16-year old skate and surf shredder who dominates all aspects of skating- street, bowls, park…you name it, this kid does it. He is the son of former pro surfer Evan Caples and his natural skate abilities are inspiring. Curren is only in 10th grade but can school skaters who are twice his age.
And, what would a skate competition be without the iconic pro skater Paul Rodriguez, A.K.A. P-Rod? Rodriguez can stomp any trick, any place, any time and with the most smooth style that skaters kill to have. P-Rod is revolutionary in the skateboard world and has pushed the limits of street skateboarding. To make the US Surf Open even more legit, expect to see veteran pro skater Rune Glifberg. Known for his awesome and aggressive skating style, Glifberg dominates in bowls and vert and has the gold medals to prove it.
Not only will the street course be open to the pros, but it will be open to the public during certain times, as well. Anybody can get a piece of the action at the US Open of Surfing so don’t miss out!
