Soothing indie surf rock melodies provided by MK and the Gentlemen filled the air at the Bo Bridges gallery in the South Bay on April 5th, 2012 for the kickoff of the Spring Soiree for Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC). Based out of Ventura, MK and the Gentlemen played for an enthusiastic audience eager to sway to their snare rim snaps and lethargic beats as Pink Jones Soda and free beer filled the stomachs of silent auction bidders.

Boarding For Breast Cancer (B4BC) is a non-profit, youth-focused education, awareness, and fundraising foundation. Their mission is to increase public awareness about breast cancer, and demonstrate how important it is to make early detections and value an active lifestyle. 15% of Bo Bridges photography/artwork and 15% of the amount paid for an auction item went towards B4BC’s cause.
B4BC was started by Monica Steward, who wanted to bring her passion for music and snowboarding into the world of young women who suffer from breast cancer. Starting her battle with breast cancer at age 26 and passing only two years later, she wanted to create a music event that promoted self-awareness of the disease while also raising money to conduct research for breast cancer. Passing only three months before the inaugural Boarding for Breast Cancer Awareness Music and Snowboard event, her legacy and memory live on not only through the co-founders Lisa Hudson, Tina Basich, Shannon Dunn, and Kathleen Gasperini, but through anyone that promotes living an active, healthy life while promoting body awareness and consistent checkups with your doctor.
B4BC co-founder, Lisa Hudson, owns Black Sun Productions, a video game production company that specializes in extreme sports video games and became good friends with Monica Steward. Lisa’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer the same year as Monica. Lisa and her family lost her mother to breast cancer after a 10-year battle in the spring of 2004.
Some of the packages auctioned off were 2 tickets to Warped Tour, a Fit Foods package of 15 healthy meals (3 a day for 5 days) that will motivate anyone to start working on that summer bod, Tahoe Longboards, to a one hour surf session with surf legend Brad “Gerr” Gerlach at the beach of your choice in the west. The Survivorship fund was offering scholarships for those who qualified for cancer survivors to help with the healing process of overcoming their battle through nature based health and wellness experiences. There was no shortage of appealing prize packages donated by major supporters advocating breast cancer awareness with proceeds going towards a good cause.

Special thanks go to Waterman’s Restaurant and bar, showcasing some of the B4BC riders such as Malia Manuel on the wall and providing for the after party and donating one dollar of every “Pink Drink” ordered to the B4BC fund. The surftastic and warm atmosphere ensured the fun continued throughout the night. Also, special thanks to Bo Bridges gallery for hosting the event. Bo’s talent are showcased in his crisp photography that demonstrates his personality. Never in one place for too long, Bo’s subjects can range from a breathtaking sunset at the pier, to looking down the line of a closeout beach break barrel, to the late great Andy Irons claiming his Pipe Masters victory at Pipe to Philip Rivers coming out of the tunnel of a home game at Qualcomm. Bo’s diversity keeps fans on their toes wondering, “what’s next?”
