Stephanie Gilmore was all smiles when she reclaimed her throne on July 14, 2012 as ASP World Women’s World Title holder in France at the Roxy Pro Biarritz. After a heated final against Tyler Wright (AUS), fellow Australian Gilmore won the heat with impressive surfing and a lot of passion. Gilmore defeated Wright 18.53 to 13.10 in the event final that took place along the French shoreline on Bastille Day.
Gilmore’s win is inspiring. Following a brutal violent assault she suffered in 2010, the road to physical and emotional recovery has not been easy. As Gilmore continues on her wave of success she has become an icon for generations of female surfers. Gilmore has appeared in Vogue and is the brand ambassador for Quiksilver’s womens clothing division (QSW). Gilmore’s presence in and out of the water has no doubt raised the bar for female surfing. Since her world title win, many have questioned if she will match fellow surfer and friend Kelly Slater’s record breaking win of 11 World Titles. It’s safe to say that Steph Gilmore is back with a vengeance to continue her World Title winning streak.
