The Boardroom Surfboard Show is taking place October 5 – 6th at the OC Fair and Events Center in Costa Mesa. Dozens of shapers and hundreds of surfboards will be on hand, celebrating surf culture and those that make it possible. The people behind the project care about surfboards and the under-sung individuals who toil away in shaping bays each day… and so do we.
The Boardroom will honor Terry Martin during the Icons of Foam Tribute to the Masters Shape-off presented by US Blanks. Five shapers will receive the honor of replicating a classic Terry Martin surfboard. Terry Martin, described by many as ‘The Machine’ because of his effortless and efficient shaping style, spent the majority of his 60-year shaping career working at the Hobie Surfboards factory. He averaged ten boards a day and surfed during lunch. We lost a humble and talented shaper last year, but now that the grieving has passed, we are ready to celebrate his legacy.
The Chunk of Foam Challenge presented by Bubble Gum Surf Wax takes shapers back to their roots. During the days of ancient Polynesian board building, boards were made out of large pieces of wood. If you wanted a board you found a tree. This contest is a take on the ancient Polynesian way, by challenging a selection of top echelon shapers to create a surfboard out of an 8′ x 2′ x 2′ piece of foam. Participating Shapers Include: Wayne Rich, Marc Andreini, Brian Hilbers, and Stu Kenson.
There will also be a “Best Of Show” Competition, in which the Boardroom will spotlight a selection of their exhibitor’s best boards. Winners receive one complimentary 10′ x10′ booth at the next The Boardroom show in 2014.
All in all, the Boardroom will feature live music, book signings, autograph signings, surf videos, good times, and great stoke. Deep down surfers mainly care about two things: surfboards and the waves they ride them on. The Boardroom recaptures the unique relationship between a surfer and his shaper.
