On September 1st, a National Paddle for Daisy took place in 36 different locations in order to raise money for Al Merrick’s eight year old granddaughter. Daisy Love Merrick and her family are currently in Israel seeking treatment for cancer, which she is battling for the third time. The goal of the paddle-a-thon was to raise money for the family, who has been bombarded with an estimated $500,000 in medical bills, not covered by insurance.
Although the swell at El Porto was expected to be pretty big, the weather conditions were perfect, making the paddle-a-thon an extreme success. Mark Chu (Christian Surfers South Bay Director) mentioned in his intro that when Daisy’s parents asked her why she was kissing a globe while spinning it, she replied, “I’m thanking everyone who is praying for me around the world.”
